Men have few close friends with whom they can find support, have fun with, and generally feel accepted by. A 2021 poll from Survey Center on American Life found that men with “no close friends” quintupled from 3% in 1990 to 15% today. Similarly, while 15% of men now report having 10+ close friends, this is significantly down from 40% in 1990. While some of this loneliness is certainly exasperated by the pandemic, a stream of studies have demonstrated a steady downward spiral over the past decade — reinforcing an already challenging social loneliness men already struggled with pre-pandemic.
